Information

  • How do we think?

  • How do we process information?

Years ago I saw a mechanism that I liked:

  • Data

  • Information

  • Philosophy

We process data until we have enough to create a segment of information.

We connect together related segments of information to build a Philosophy.

In one of his commercials for a course about Thinking, Neil deGrasse Tyson, made comments about a progression, similar to the three we have above.  I am trying to find a YouTube video where he summarizes this from his perspective.  While trying to find this "Grail of Information", I'm finding other Tyson YouTube videos that could interest you.

Science and Theology - I thought the person interviewing Neil did a good job of asking questions and letting Neil have the time to explain his perspective.  The topic is extremely difficult.  Regardless of where you place yourself in such discussions, you probably have found yourself at some point working as hard as you could to be fair and gracious to someone else with a different view--you are to be commended for that.

Thinking - This five minute speech resonated with me.  I've heard a Ph.D. chemist, who was a vice president at a company, brag about memorizing the Periodic Table to pass a class in Graduate School.  For my General Chemistry I class, our instructor told us he disagreed with the idea that Graduate Students ought to be required to memorize all the Elements and their places in the Periodic Table.

Rice Commencement Speech - Neil talks about events around 1968 and mentions a photograph that had the power to inspire us, a photograph taken from the other side of the moon, looking at Earth.
